Helpful Tips for Pansies & Violas

Pansies and Violas are tough little plants that thrive in cool temperatures, making them ideal for early spring. They can usually be planted outside about a month before the last frost – but only after they’ve been properly hardened off*. These flowers do best in well-drained soil and filtered sun, especially once the summer heat kicks in. If the forecast dips below 32-degrees, cover them with a light blanket or move containers inside to prevent frost damage.

To keep your plants blooming longer, regularly remove spent blooms. Whe summer heats up, trim them back and mulch to retain moisture. With a little care, many pansies will reward you with another round of blooms in the fall.

*Hardening Off: A process of acclimating plants that have been growing indoors to outdoor weather conditions. Gradually move your plants outdoors for a portion of the day to introduce them to the sun, wind and cold night temperatures. This process usually takes 3-5 days.
