At Longfellow’s, all of our poinsettias are grown right here in our greenhouses. Christmas in July is a reality for us, because that is when the planting begins! Each summer, we start the process of planting more than 20,000 poinsettias in over 50 unique varieties, and by the holiday season, our greenhouses are transformed into breathtaking seas of red. From classic favorites in red and white to eye-catching novelties with unique colors and variegations, every poinsettia is lovingly cared for by our team. Stop in this holiday season and find your favorite Longfellow’s-grown poinsettia to bring home the beauty of the season.
We have poinsettias available in the following sizes:
4.5″, 6.5″, 7″, 8″, 10″ and 12″.
Poinsettia Care tips:
-Temperature: The average home temperature is fine. Generally, Poinsettias will grow best at temperatures between 65-75 degrees. A slight temperature drop in the evening can help encourage bud development and future blooms. Do not place your Poinsettia close to a direct heat source or any cold, draft areas.
-Light: Poinsettias prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight and aim for about six hours of light each day.
-Water: Allow the top inch or two of the soil to dry out before watering well. Poinsettias prefer slightly moist soil, but they don’t like to sit in water or be soaking wet. Always check the soil before watering.
-Getting your Poinsettia to blossom next year: When the leaves have fallen, prune back your plant so it is about 4-6 inches above the soil. This step is optional but can help encourage new growth and a fuller shape. Use a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks through the spring-summer.
From the end of September, careful light control is essential. Place the plant in a room that has bright sunlight during the day, but no artificial light during the evening hours. To encourage flowering, the plant bust be kept in total darkness for 14-16 hours a day, for about six weeks. Once this process is complete, return to the growing tips above for the holiday season.
